Abstract
There is only limited evidence for human activity in the Study Area from the Prehistoric to the early historic period and no indication of a specific focus on the Site itself. In the Post-Medieval period, major developments occurred to the west of the Site, with the construction of the Royal Dockyards and Ordnance Storehouses at Woolwich from
1518, and particularly the sequence of ordnance factories beginning with the Royal Laboratory in 1696, later known as the Royal Arsenal/Royal Ordnance Factory. Until the early 19th century the Site appears to have been undeveloped marshland.
