Exeter RAF Station, during World War Two, saw action from the early years of the war and the threat of German invasion, to the preparation and transport of airborne troops on D-Day and beyond to the Japanese theatre. A study of existing archive and historical material, including aerial photographs from the 1940’s, and after, has assisted in creating a detailed understanding of the surviving [...]

The discovery of the remains of a crashed Junkers 88 aircraft in the outer Thames Estuary during dredging for the DP World London Gateway project was both unexpected and exciting. The seabed off the south and east coasts of England contains one of the highest concentrations of crashed aircraft in the world. It is particularly rich in military aircraft, as a result of the pivotal role that air [...]

Wessex Archaeology

The evaluation trenches targeted geophysical anomalies within the Site. No archaeological features were identified, and the geophysical anomalies were likely to be the result of natural outcrops of the underlying mudstone, or depressions within that mudstone. The only natural feature of note was a shallow depression or pond. There is no archaeological evidence for settlement within the Site, [...]

This report seeks to provide an understanding of the located marine archaeological asset record through interrogation of all the records from the NMRS that were classified as maritime, the records in the NMRS for infrastructure in a marine setting, principally sea-washed lighthouses, and any other assets in the NMRS found in a fully marine (i.e. not intertidal) environment.

Time Team’s work aimed to clarify the layout of the Praetorium and to phase the development of the buildings. In this the evaluation was only partially successful. Four of the five trenches were positioned in areas which had been previously excavated, and there proved to be a lack of stratified dateable artefacts which could be used to phase the different elements of the building complex. [...]

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Channel 4’s Time Team at the site of the German 2nd Battery of mixed anti-aircraft battalion 364 to the south of Les Gellettes on the island of Jersey. The Battery was constructed following the Occupation of the island in July 1940 and contained six 88mm and three 20mm anti-aircraft guns, just a small percentage of the 165 anti-aircraft guns recorded [...]

The evaluation was successful in its stated aims in providing a detailed geophysical plan of the wider area around the villa, identifying that it was a much larger complex than initially thought, and by identifying at least two phases of villa construction. The earliest phase is potentially dated on artefactual evidence to the late 2nd to early 3rd centuries AD, but remains slightly ambiguous as [...]
