The results of the work at Oldfurnace Cottage confirmed that iron smelting using the bloomery process, with associated pottery of 13th-14th century date, was well established on the site in the medieval period. However an unstratified sherd of Late Saxon pottery suggested that iron working on the site may have begun as early as the 10th-11th century. The bloomery slag was overlain by large [...]

One of five geotechnical test pits contained evidence for the presence of riverine deposits comprising layers of peat and a second pit contained evidence of rubbish dumping dating from the medieval and Post-medieval periods. Deposits were located in two more pits but these appear to have been disturbed and no dating evidence was recovered to determine their archaeological significance. The fifth [...]

Archaeological evidence has been gained from the Site with the presence of the magazine building but it and earlier deposits will have been removed by 19th century brickearth extraction across part of the Site. The recorded artefactual finds from prehistory are mainly due to the near locality of the river, with finds washed up along the foreshore and the discovery of a Bronze Age trackway and [...]

Wessex Archaeology

The historical and archaeological evidence suggests that there is possible potential for archaeological remains of all periods, and in particular a high potential for Roman remains. The possible presence of prehistoric and Saxon deposits of high significance, due to their rarity and favourable preservation conditions, is also noted.

The majority of trenches contained little or no remains of archaeological interest. However, a concentration of features, including pits, postholes and ditches containing Early to Middle Iron Age pottery, was found in the southern part of the evaluation area. The remains suggest that there is a focus of late prehistoric settlement activity in this part of the Site.

Very little was noted either from the SMR data or through the map regression exercise, with only Roman stray finds of coins and Post-medieval structural evidence in the environs of the Site. Impact from the construction of the retail complex will be slight due to the intention to surcharge the present land levels and then discretely pile through the raised level.

Prehistoric activity from all periods is attested in this area of Croydon. Roman and medieval settlement and cemeteries appear to be concentrated to the south and west of Suffolk House; activity in the area of the Site, especially in the medieval period, is likely to have been rural in character and not have produced significant archaeological remains. In the Post-medieval period development was [...]
